RISE Engineering

I worked at RISE Engineering as an engineering intern for the 2017 and 2018 summers along with school breaks and part time remotely during the spring semester of my freshman year. The division of RISE I was at works in large commercial and industrial natural gas efficiency. They worked on three classes of projects: custom audits, post inspections and custom reviews. Each class of project would require the engineers to go on a site visit to inspect some aspect of the facilities, then produce a report for the customer and the energy provider informing both parties of the energy savings for the proposed measures, and the incentives available for the installation of such measures.

My primary role at RISE was creating templates and programs using Microsoft Office and VBA (visual basic applications) to help automate the process of producing the reports for each type of project. The most involved tool I created was for the automated generation of custom audits for Cape Light Compact projects. These reports were approximately 10 pages and length and required extensive and repetitive calculations. My Excel based project automatically calculated the savings, costs and incentives for over 30 different energy conservation measures by interfacing with over 35 different pre-existing custom excel-based cost and savings calculators. The tool will save engineers anywhere from 3-5 hours per project and has already saved the company 100+ man-hours of work over the course of its first year of partial use.

In my time there, I assisted engineers in site visits for both custom audits and post inspections. Additionally, I produced several reports for customers under the supervision of the other engineers, especially when we were left short-handed during a brief period of turnover within the division.
